Welcome to Fightline’s live coverage of UFC Fight Night 72.
Today’s card comes to us from The SSE Hydro in Glasgow, Scotland, with bouts airing on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.
This marks the first time the Octagon has made a stop in Scotland after 15 previous events were held throughout the United Kingdom.
In the main event, Britain’s own Michael Bisping takes on Thales Leites. The 36-year-old Bisping (26-7) has alternated wins and losses in each of his last nine fights, going 5-4 including an April victory over C.B. Dollaway.
Leites (25-4) is on a eight-fight win streak that includes five consecutive since returning to the UFC in 2013. In January, he choked out Tim Boetsch.
Other planned bouts include Ross Pearson vs. Evan Dunham, Joseph Duffy vs. Ivan Jorge, Joanne Calderwood vs. Cortney Casey-Sanchez, Leon Edwards vs. Pawel Pawlak and Steven Ray vs. Leonardo Mafra.
The main card begins at 1 p.m. ET on FS1 after four prelims on the same network starting at 11 a.m. ET. That card includes Paddy Holohan vs. Vaughan Lee, Ilir Latifi vs. Hans Stringer, Michael Lebout vs. Teemu Packalen and Robert Whiteford vs. Paul Redmond.
On Fight Pass starting at 10 a.m. ET will be Marcus Brimage vs. Jimmie Rivera and Daniel Omielanczuk vs. Chris De La Rocha.
Now, let’s get to the action! Remember to keep hitting “refresh” for the latest results:
PRELIMINARY CARD
Daniel Omielanczuk vs. Chris De La Rocha
We’ll kick things off in the heavyweight division, as Daniel Omielanczuk (16-5-1) takes on Chris De La Rocha (3-0).
Round 1: Omielanczuk with some hugh shots and he has De La Rocha hurt. After landing with straight jabs, Omielanczuk connects with nasty kicks to the face and body. He’s got him wobbled for a second time inside of the first 30 seconds, but De La Rocha is still upright. A right connects and after a few shots on the ground, the ref has called a stop to this one quickly.
Daniel Omielanczuk def. Chris De La Rocha via TKO (strikes) at :48 of Round 1
Marcus Brimage vs. Jimmie Rivera
Our final Fight Pass prelim sees us head down to the bantamweight ranks, as Marcus Brimage (7-4) takes on the 16-1 Jimmie Rivera.
Round 1: Big head-kick attempt by Rivera right off the bat and these two are getting after it. Exchanges aplenty from both, and Rivera sweeps him to the ground with a leg kick. Body work now for Rivera, who is making his UFC debut and hasn’t lost since 2008. Brimage was covering up and now we know why, as Rivera connects and rocks him. More shots from Rivera and this one is over, as Brimage has no idea where he is at. Seconds after the ref had stepped in, Brimage was still trying to figure out where he was.
Jimmie Rivera def. Marcus Brimage via TKO (strikes) at 1:29 of Round 1
Robert Whiteford vs. Paul Redmond
The televised prelims begin with featherweights Robert Whiteford (11-2) and Paul Redmond (10-5) going toe-to-toe.
Round 1: Redmond with a good inside leg kick, peppering Whiteford with more and more kicks. Good exchange won by Redmond, but Whiteford comes back with a right to the body and a shot to the head with a hook. He catches a head kick and knocks Whiteford to the ground with another shot. The ref steps in and warns both after they each poke the other in the eye. Lock-up and Whiteford tries for a judo trip, but is denied. Redmond is the more productive striker, but Whiteford’s shots have been with more power and have done some damage to the face. A loud chant breaks out in support of Whiteford, and he answers it with a few shots. He drops Redmond with a right and follows up, and this one is over.
The crowd erupts for Whiteford and he sprints up and over the cage and into the crowd, embracing with the fans.
Robert Whiteford def. Paul Redmond via TKO (strikes) at 3:04 of Round 1
