Another special night went down Saturday at UFC 190, as the Octagon landed in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Ronda Rousey did exactly what she said she would do, overwhelming Bethe Correia in just 34 seconds and retaining her UFC female bantamweight championship.
Rousey, who was booed heavily upon entering the Octagon, wasted little time imposing her will. She connected with a right to the temple, dropping Correia straight to the canvas.
Mauricio “Shogun” Rua earned a win over Antonio Rogerio Nogueira via decision in a rematch 10 years in the making. Rua won the first while both were competing in Pride on his way to the Grand Prix title.
Two new Ultimate Fighter: Brazil winners were crowned, as Reginaldo Vieira claimed the bantamweight title and Glaicio Franca won in the lightweight division. Rua and Nogueira were the coaches, as “Lil Nog” replaced Anderson Silva after “The Spider’s” failed drug tests.
Following a pair of devastating knockout losses, Stefan Struve earned a decision vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. “The Skyscraper” hit the former interim UFC heavyweight champion with just about everything he had, handing Nogueira his second straight loss in his home country.
In the first heavyweight bout of the night, Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva came back from a slow start to destroy Soa Palelei. Silva snapped a two-fight losing skid with the impressive finish in less than a minute of the second round.
Claudia Gadelha earned herself a likely rematch with UFC strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejzcyk, besting former World Series of Fighting titleholder Jessica Aguilar.
Demian Maia gave the Brazilian fans a reason to go wild before the main card started, submitting Neil Magny in the main event of the prelims. Maia, a former title contender at middleweight, earned his third straight victory in the process.
Patrick Cummins came into hostile territory and stopped former Strikeforce champion Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante, claiming a third round finish. The win was the fourth inside the Octagon for the former barista.
Fighting for the 10th time in his native home of Brazil, Warlley Alves earned another finish, submitting Nordine Taleb. The former Ultimate Fighter: Brazil winner scored a second round submission after locking up a guillotine choke.
He didn’t get the finish, but Iuri Alcantara dominated Leandro Issa after a slow start, scoring a decision. Alcantara picked up his 32nd career victory, showing precision striking vs. Issa.
Vitor Miranda earned the first stoppage of the night, using vicious elbows to best Clint Hester in the second round. Guido Cannetti claimed a close decision victory over Hugo Viana to start the night in the bantamweight division.
Rousey and Maia each earned “Performance of the Night” bonuses, while Rua and Nogueira were awarded the “Fight of the Night.” All four picked up an additional $50,000.
